For those of you who may not know, the video's author, Jackson Katz, just
recently published his first book, "The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt
Women and How All Men Can Help." (Sourcebooks, Inc., Naperville, IL, 2006)
You may find it useful in gender and other soc. courses.

Subject: TEACHSOC: Tough Guise - excellent film on Masculinity

Our university just purchased a copy of the film Tough Guise: Violence,
Media & the Crisis in Masculinity and it has been such a wonderful
documentary that I wanted to post information about it.

The central premise of Tough Guise is that violence in America is
overwhelmingly a gendered phenomenon, and that any attempt to understand
violence therefore requires that we understand its relationship to
masculinity and manhood.

It is wonderfully informed by sociological concepts and provides a very
thoughtful discussion of the role of popular culture in reinforcing a
normative culture of masculinity that can be very harmful for women and men.

It features Jackson Katz who is one of America's leading anti-sexist male
activists. He is widely recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field
of gender violence prevention education with men and boys, particularly in
the sports culture and the military.

The film can be purchased through the Media Education Foundation in a
longer or shorter version and there is a wonderful study guide that is
available for download.
