Hi All,

If you're gonna hack things, particularly building things, you probably need to draw them. To draw them, you probably want a drawing program of some kind. One of the most popular low to medium end CAD systems is TurboCAD Deluxe by IMSI ( http://www.imsidesign.com/ ). I've been threatening to get into this at a hobby level myself just to learn it and to draw potential ideas for inventions, illustrations for a novel, things around the house, etc.

Until the 22nd of January 2015, Frys has TurboCAD Deluxe for Windows on sale for $ 30. It's normally $ 100. To buy the current version from IMSI is normally $ 130.

This is a version that's about 2 years old, v19. However, IMSI has a deal going for Frys where it's a "forever box". That means that you will be offered a one time upgrade to the current version (v 21) for free when you install the old one. I doubt that the upgrade offer lasts forever.

This boxed version also has about 7-8 hours of video training included on the DVD, as well as several hundred pages of training exercises in PDF files. They have their own native video player (Camtasia?) that they want you to go through. However, you can copy all the avi files to your pc and use VLC to play them.

Here's the sequence I went through for those who are interested. I assigned a separate install directory to each version in case I want to experiment with them separately.

A) Install TurboCAD v 19 from the DVD. You will need the serial numbers and codes on the DVD sleeve. B) Initially decline the upgrade but don't say never ask again. C) When the product asks about an activation code, click the button to online register the product with the company. D) Get and install the activation code from the web page or your email. E) Open a blank drawing. F) Go to the help menu and check for updates (not upgrades) and install. G) Close and restart the program. The upgrade offer should appear again. This time, accept it.

You are taken to a web page where you are invited to download the TurboCAD v 21 installer.

H) Download the installer and save it (and back it up). I) Click the Upgrade button on the same web page. J) It should take you to a screen to register your v 21 from v 19 upgrade. J.5) If that fails, make a print of the screen for later reference if you have to call them. Try the upgrade again later. K) You should see the serial number and activation code for v 21 on the web page and in an email. L) Run the install file you downloaded and specify a different install directory if you want. M) Enter the serial number and activation code. N) Open a blank drawing file and go to the help menu and check for updates and install.

You should now have both TurboCAD Deluxe v 19 and v 21 installed and updated. You may wish to start and activate the video training from the DVD.

I found some cool videos on Youtube for training and examples by typing turbocad into the search box. These two resources looked interesting.

Since I'm a newbie at using this product, if any of you have advice on how to learn and use it, I'd appreciate any information you share either on the list or privately.

Sincerely,

Ron
