Overview
The Desktop Deployment Web Seminar Series is a technical educational series designed to drive enthusiasm and action around deploying Windows XP and Office XP. The series will be comprised of weekly one-hour interactive Web events discussing deployment strategies for Microsoft's Business Desktop. Desktop deployment technologies, tools and best practices will be showcased and discussed by Microsoft Product Managers and Deployment Specialists. Each session will be hosted by a Microsoft IT Professional. Series sessions 2-10 will be directly followed by an online, moderated TechNet chat. The chat is an opportunity for participants to get answers to their questions on that day's seminar topic. (Some questions will be answered during the event)  Each session will be available on Microsoft.com for on-demand viewing following the event and will remain posted for 6 months.

We will examine the hardware and software requirements for deployment and provide an overview of the steps necessary for a successful desktop migration. Joint Deployment Issues
Planning a Joint Windows XP and Office XP Deployment

Session Two provides information about specific tools and practices for deploying Microsoft® Office XP in a Microsoft Windows® XP environment. We will actively discuss the use of the User State Migration Tool, Imaging deployments of the desktop (Sysprep & Riprep), and Administrative Installation Points as related to Group Policy Object-based deployment through IntelliMirror® services and Remote Installation Services (RISetup). Session Three provides a discussion of the Windows Installer service and why it is critical to the deployment and management of Office XP. We will clarify the differences in Windows Installer versions, and detail the benefits of Office XP Management with Windows Installer 2.0 (native to Windows XP). Session Four provides information about the back-end infrastructure and technologies for unattended installations of Office XP and Windows XP as well as the benefits/tradeoffs for each method. Technologies to be discussed include Systems management Server, Unattended Setup/Remote Installation Services (RIS), Group Policy-based deployment, Administrative Installation Points, and use of scripts. We'll also cover Custom Office CD Deployment and the use of URL-based implementations for deploying Office XP. *This session includes real-time participant visible polling and Q&A on technical issues and technologies.

Image-based Installation of the XP Desktop

Session Five provides key knowledge of the infrastructure and techniques required for image-based, integrated installations of Windows XP and Office XP. Technologies discussed include the Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) and other third-party imaging tools for standalone use or use with WinPE. We will examine the usage of Public Properties for Office XP in relation to Imaging and the changes brought to the Office XP Installation Behavior by Service Pack 1 for Imaging. *This session includes real-time participant visible polling and Q&A on technical issues and technologies.

Migration Technologies
Migrate User Settings & Data for Smooth Deployment

Session Six provides an overview of the essential tools required for migration including User State Migration Tool, Software Management Server, ADMT, Group Policy, and roaming profiles. For Office XP, we take a high-level view of its ability to migrate user settings and previous Feature States of the product, as well as deployment tools for managing User Data States. For Windows XP, we'll address technologies used to migrate, move, or roam User State, including Office XP States, from one location to another - useful information for user management, user migration, and system upgrades. *This session includes real-time participant visible polling and Q&A on technical issues and technologies.

Testing & Piloting Windows XP
Practices for Deployment of Windows XP Professional

Session Seven answers the question: So now that you think you know what will work, how do you verify it? We'll go into detail on technologies including Software Management Server, application compatibility, hardware compatibility, Group Policy, and User State Migration Tool. Session Eight provides a description of the different deployment and troubleshooting tools in the Office Resource Kit. We'll go over Troubleshooting Windows Installer Log files and Events and discuss deployment of Office XP as a Corporate Error Reporting aware application and further information on the use of Administrative Installation Points. *This session includes real-time participant visible polling and Q&A on technical issues and technologies.


Week Nine
Post-Deployment
Managing the Desktop Environment After Deployment

Session Nine provides a follow up of the process for changing a deployment state using the Custom Maintenance Wizard for Office Features managed by the Windows Installer service. We'll include managing an Office XP service level by various Patch Management techniques with Software Management Server, and the use of the Patch Inventory Tool. Additionally, we'll cover best practices to keep your Windows XP Desktops secure and up to date with patches using Group Policy, SMS, Windows Update, Security Rollup Packages, slipstreaming, and hot fixes. *This session includes real-time participant visible polling and Q&A on technical issues and technologies.
