This worked. It booted up the system.
The version of XP on it wanted to be reactivated.
The nic driver wasn't loaded so I couldn't without calling Microsoft.
What a pain.

Generally you can't even get to safe mode. I've read some steps about using
sysprep but I've pulled down sysprepped images before on mismatched machines
and have gotten the endless BSOD.

I have performed the steps in the support article below successfully:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082

It's an "unsupported fix" but it's on the MS site so that makes people feel a
little better about it usually. Basically it walks you through how to add
support for every storage controller chipset that xp can support all at once.
You have to be able to do this while the hdd is in the machine where it does
boot. Then move it and it should boot up...I've done it once.

I would install it in the new box, boot to safe mode, delete all the drivers
from system manager, install/run something like Belarc Advisor or Speccy to
determine what hardware is in the new box, and download and install those
drivers. As long as windows itself isn't hosed, that should work.

Subject: [tech-geeks] moving a working XP boot drive to another box

A friend has a slow old XP PC. I tried to move the hard drive to another
newer motherboard and it just blue screens when booting. I was hoping
it would be close enough to boot and detect the new hardware but
that didn't happen.

Do I need to put the hard drive back and sysprep it, then move it or what?

I normally rebuild the PC from scratch but I don't really have a lot
of time right now to do that.

Or should I do a repair install or something?
Thanks.
John.
