Dan,

Thanks for the work you obviously have done below. This may turn out to be useful for many of us.

Some people wonder why large installs have not moved from XP to this.:P

For those of you who run Novell and or Zenworks (ZCM), Window 7 and image you need to do a couple of things to work with ZCM and then if you want to have Windows 7 be able to activate properly then you need to do something else too.

Windows 7 has to have sysprep run with the generalize feature for the activation to work, even though you change the SID it doesn’t let you activate as Windows 7 has to have each machine be a completely different machine for it to work.

Zenworks is easier, but if you follow all of the steps below after the image process and sysprep it will make you put in a computer name and will register in ZCM.

Zac unr –u user –p password Will unregister the client with the server

Zac reg –u user –p password https://serverip will register the client with the server

Zac fsg –d Removes the client info from just the client, but does not unregister from the server, but you can delete the workstation from the server too

This works below to remove all of the previous GUID settings and gets the machine ready for imaging. Run sysprep at the end – Windows 7 it is in C:\Windows\System32\sysprep and select generalize. This also when the image is done will have you put in a computer name and it will register with Zenworks automatically.

- 1: Install a machine with the zen client (and or novell client)

- 2: Run regedit and delete the following entries:

HKLM\Software\Novell\Zenworks\Preagent\GUID entry

HKLM\Software\Novell\Zenworks\Remote Management\ALL machine name entries

- 3: Now stop all novell services on the workstation (should be 3-5)

- 4: Browse to c:\program files\Novell\Zenworks\Cache and delete the entire ZMD directory

- 5: Browse to c:\program files\Novell\ZenWorks\Conf dir and

delete the following files: Devicedata, deviceguid, GUID.txt

rename the initial-web-service.bak to initial-web-service

(IF YOU DON'T DO THIS The machines WILL GET another SID, but DON'T GET ANOTHER GUID AND DEVICEID. ) even if they are cleaned of preboot settings

- 6: Run c:\program files\Novell\Zenworks\Bin\Preboot\ziswin

- 7: Click Edit| Clear imagesafe data and save

- 8: Click no on the mark for just imaged question

- 9: Optional for Microsoft SUS server (see details below)

- 10: Run sysprep -mini -quiet -reseal. (Windows 7 has sysprep in C:/windows/system32/sysprep/)

DON'T START THE MACHINE IN WINDOWS AGAIN, BUT TAKE AN IMAGE AT THIS POINT!
