We got a Hoover Wind Tunnel a few years ago and have been amazed at
how well it cleans. While there is no bag to change the ~ $40 filter
needs to be brushed out after ever use and replaced at least yearly
IMHO.

We subscribe to Consumer Reports. The Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary
Edition U6485-900 $230 had the highest score of all models tested
74/100 but did not get a Best Buy award for some reason.

They give Eureka Boss Smart Vac 4870 $169 69/100 (excellent but hard
to handle), Kenmore Progressive 35922 $300 72/100 and Kenmore
Progressive 36932 $260 68/100 all got their 'Best Buy' award.

I would go for the Hoover Wind Tunnel again. Four years of excellent
service and no sign of wearing out.
