Just wondering if you tried to print any PDF's before the problem, I have seen this (seems only with HP's) and 'normally' updating printer drivers fixes it, (or Adobe) but the fix for the non starting print spooler is this...
At the cmd prompt run net stop spooler (should already be stopped, but... just in case) Got to Windows\system32\PRINTERS\Spool\ and delete any files there Then again at the cmd prompt run net start spooler I see this problem a fair bit, and 92.4% of the time its after they tried to print a PDF that has some issues.. I also had a 2600n printer installed on the server and there was a conflict with the ports. The fix was to change the 2600n port to a "Standard TCP/IP" port and the 4015n port to an "HP TCP/IP Standard" port. Once I did this, the spooler started working again.
