We don't have a policy against that and I think you'd have a hard time enforcing that one off campus. We did have a teacher that had several students as friends. We had a little problem with one of the sports teams last year that involved some pictures that were posted on facebook. The teacher hadn't seen them but the implication was that she had turned them in, which she probably would have been obligated to do (or at least tell the parents). She has since decided that it is far better not to friend the students because they are way, too liberal with their personal lives and information. It turned out that it was another group of vindictive students that sent the pictures to the coach. That started a war because the senders forgot that when you live in a glass house it's best not to start throwing rocks.

For clarification, I asked: "You mean, do we have a policy governing whether a staff member can have students as 'Friends' on their sites?" She says, "that's right". I said, "I don't think there's a formal policy regarding that.... but, don't do it." Do other folks have formal policies regarding this?
