The output is two different strings. The value of the variable
$right_now will be different and using the variable elsewhere in the
script could give the different results Paul experienced ("second one
works, but the first one doesn't").

Since the period is inside the "'s it is just a part of the string and
the interpreter will not "see" it. Will not make a difference.
