You have to have a sub certificate in order to sub but they are not hard to get and you don't have to qualify for a teaching certificate in order to get a sub certificate. You do have to hold a 4 year degree - at least you used to.

Yep. I stopped subbing in 1997, but the ROE told me to sub I had to have a
sub cert to work as a sub. While I was working as an aide, if I had an hour
of sub time, I got an hour of TRS credit. The aide time was IMRF.

I think the rules you are referring to are pretty old.

No exception for subs really because you have to have a substitute certificate to legally sub in IL (at least St. Clair County ROE made me get one and keep it up to stay on the list) . I subbed for about 6 years before I retired from the Air Force. Also subbed during prep and
lunch when
I was an aide. Sometimes having that certificate wasn't good.

If I am not mistaken, you cannot participate in TRS unless you are in a position that requires a certificate. I think there may be an exception for substitute teachers since subs can get TRS credit and you do not need a teaching certificate (though you do need a sub card).

I also recall a rule that schools must offer IMRF to non-cert employees working over a certain number of hours/year. Are they at least giving you IMRF?
