I'll throw a spanner in the works and suggest the kernel-level interface for listing extended attributes should be the same as the interface for listing directories. I'm not sure if this is really a good idea or not, but it would allow sharing code in some places and it reduces the chances that something left out of the interface will be wanted next year.
