Okay. I juggled things around a bit, so the vnconfig and mount were done on the NFS server instead, with the vnd mount point exported. Then, while adding debugging code to the stuff running on the NFS client, I found that I no longer needed to do it at all. :-) So it's not a practical issue for me now. It might turn into one at some as-yet-indeterminate future point, but I'll deal with that if-and-when it happens.
