Adjusting the bar upwards can be a challenge. There's a
widespread meme that doing things right costs extra. Typical
chat with consultant X, technical lead for a project to
virtualize our ERP:
Me: The database needs to be benchmarked in the new
environment to avoid uncovering performance problems
after cutover.
X: That's book learning. In real life no one does that.
It's never been a problem.
Me: It will cost dearly if the schedule slips at the end, just
before Spring term starts.
X: My company has virtualized tons of large Oracle systems.
We never run benchmarks, we never have problems.
Me: *Boggle*. Let's move on to why replicated databases are
not the same as making periodic backups.
