If you want to increase your chances of getting your data, I would
really prefer imaging the drives first (and once), before recovering
(possibly more than once, with different tools) from the image files,
using a tool like R-Studio. Spinrite has the dubious reputation of
being the only tool I know that writes to the drive you're recovering
from.

I have done several HFS+ recoveries with R-Studio. If its somewhat
technical interface doesn't put you off, I recommend it highly.
