I have been using freeipmi/openipmi successfully on a number of Dell/Intel/Sun servers .

The core of the monitoring script runs $(ipmimonitoring | grep -v Nominal) but 'ipmotool sel elist' and 'ipmitool sdr elist' are also quite useful.
