I respectfully disagree. I don't think you'll find that
setting TERM=dumb will cause this behavior at all.
Andrew, I believe what you describe would be the result of
having verbose enabled. I just tried it to make sure and it
certainly 'did it for me'. What do you see as the output to
set --state ?
Have you actually tried
set +v
to see if the command line echo disappears?
