I bought the Brother HL-2270DW laser printer last year for similar reasons and am very happy with its' performance and toner use. I like the direct wifi printing across our home network.
For the occasional scan, I have the Neat Mobile and it is very durable, plus I like the software (although I don't really use it for receipts). I have a full old multifunction fax machine in my home office, but I often just scan a signature page if needed and use online fax services (k7 for incoming, fax zero when I'm not near the fax machine and need outgoing).
