I bought the Brother HL-2270DW laser printer last year for similar reasons
and am very happy with its' performance and toner use. I like the direct
wifi printing across our home network.

For the occasional scan, I have the Neat Mobile and it is very durable,
plus I like the software (although I don't really use it for receipts).

I have a full old multifunction fax machine in my home office, but I often
just scan a signature page if needed and use online fax services (k7 for
incoming, fax zero when I'm not near the fax machine and need outgoing).

May seem kludgey, but it works for me.
