Sorry, literally seconds later I found it myself. In the aforementioned http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006427 It says: "VMware recommends using NTP instead of VMware Tools periodic time synchronization." And Brian said: "Both vmware tools and ntpdate have the huge problems of jolting the clock to the correct time and the possibility of time going backwards." So... Ok, thanks guys. I'm convinced.
