It's a question of how much can you do without learning the underlying language of the package? What can you *NOT* do without it? Maybe it's because I work in an environment where I *always* seem to need to learn the most complicated cake-icing-tip in the pack to be able to get my work done, but you really do need to learn the limits [and strengths] of the package's configuration language to make sure that you can build the functions that you need. OTOH, after you've learned a few computer languages, picking up one or two more is truly trivial, and you'll probably be writing those Ruby scripts in your sleep in no time! My point - if learning yet-another-programming-language is daunting to you, perhaps you should look for an easier field to work in. I've lost track of the number of computer languages that I've needed to learn, and I expect to learn a few dozen more before I'm done! Parlez-vous APL? Non? C'est dommage! (And yes, I've programmed APL in my professional career!) I've found that I always learn the languages that I really need to get my job done, and none of them have been that difficult, although some require more alcoholic 'motivation' than others! And no, I *don't* know FORTRAN, no matter *how* much you're offering!!!! - Richard _______________________________________________ Tech mailing list [email protected] http://lopsa.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tech This list provided by the League of Professional System Administrators http://lopsa.org/
