There was a historical reason for avoiding 80-column-wide output.
On a terminal without the "VT100 glitch" feature, after you write
to the 80th column, the cursor will wrap to the next line.  If you
then issue a newline, the cursor will move down another line, leaving
an empty line.

Terminals without the VT100 glitch effectively no longer exist,
though.
