So you are talking about hardware without an encoded MAC, where the kernel supplies a random MAC to get you going. Yeah, that won't work out well. I think the users who encounter that are going to figure it out quickly and they are on their own. Other than that, I still think MAC is the identifier we should give priority to. So I would like for this to be flipped, and then I think we can consider this work done.
