Systems Administrator

The System Administrator is responsible for the engineering and maintenance
of the UNIX (Solaris, Linux) environment.

Software: Solaris 8 * 10 Red Hat Linux, ksh, sh, perl, Solaris JumpStart,
NIS+, Veritas Cluster Server, Volume Manager and File System. ZFS, Power
Path, Packaging,

The role is also responsible for the hardware, storage, and other physical
devices. Job Requirements are as follows, but there may be additional tasks
required to meet the needs of the business:

* Monitor systems performance. Review systems logs and other application
logs for errors. Report issues to management with recommendations for
resolution. Implement problem resolution procedures as necessary. Document
changes as they occur.

* Install and configure servers. Keep servers current by applying Operating
System updates (patches).

* Apply packages and patches. Establish new configurations and modify
existing configurations as needed to meet business and security
requirements.

* Work with engineers to create new environments, modify existing
environments.

* Document existing environment. Prepare diagrams using Visio and other
tools

* Maintain hardware such as network cards, HBA cards, disk drives. Install
drivers, replace failed hardware, rack and stack servers

* Assist with Backup and Recovery. Monitor the backup environment. Label and
swap tapes. Ensure tapes are sent off site. Restore files upon request.

* Write shell scripts and perl programs to automate repetitive tasks,
collect statistics, fulfill business and technical requirements as they
arise.

* Review configurations for high availability.

* Test and certify that systems meet specifications for redundancy and high
availability.

* Maintain existing scripts. Document changes; maintain current documents.

* Provide as part of the team, support for the production during the
business day and off-hours. Ensure production jobs execute successfully by
reviewing logs. Respond to exceptions by troubleshooting, making
recommendations for resolution and implementing same upon approvals. Take
initiative when necessary to ensure the needs of the business are met.

* Utilize ticketing system to document issues, record results, and escalate
incidents and problems.

* Keep abreast of technology developments. Research technologies that may
appear to be useful for solving business issues. Develop scripting skills
using shell, perl and other technologies as may be appropriate.

* Write ksh, sql, and perl scripts to automate repetitive tasks and create
tools for new tasks.

* Create new databases in production, development, QA, and Disaster Recovery
environments. Modify existing databases. Monitor changes as they take place.
Resolve issues with change procedures, reporting to management with
recommendations.

* Manage production roll-outs. Ensure changes are documented and approved
before execution. Prepare back-out plans prior to implementation. Execute
scripts to install new database objects, users, etc. Ensure proper
permissions are granted. Alert management to issues with recommendations for
resolution.

* Install and configure new Sybase ASE servers, Oracle servers, MS-SQL
servers. Configure servers based on application requirements. Migrate
databases to new servers. Apply patches and other database package updates
to existing servers.

* Write, analyze, and tune SQL queries to explore performance issues, modify
access rights, etc.

* Monitor nightly and weekend Oracle, Sybase, and MS-SQL database
maintenance. Ensure transaction log dumps are taking place. Perform database
restores as needed. Modify batch jobs as needed to add functionality or
correct issues.

* Manage database user accounts. Add new users; ensure correct permissions
based on application requirements and the environment. Delete or lock
accounts upon request. Examine usage patterns, modify passwords, and ensure
proper account access of administration accounts.

* Utilize ticketing system to document issues, record results, and escalate

* Provide as part of the team, support for the production during the
business day and off-hours. Ensure production jobs execute successfully by
reviewing logs. Respond to exceptions by troubleshooting, making
