I've been looking to do the same thing with a particular site I just 
redesigned. Right now all the pages are manually generated. But I've been 
looking at the ttree script that generates the docs and it seems pretty 
similar to what I want to do. I have the same problem as you, that on 
certain sub-pages I want to expand the navigation to include links for the 
subsection I am in. I think I have an idea (based on the docs config), but 
I have not had a chance to try it out.

Maybe this would be a good place for you to start as well?
