I uninstalled ImageMagick Q16, removed it from the PATH as well, then
downloaded and installed ImageMagick Q8.  Same results -- crash.  I
tried
densities of 150 and 300.  Same results for either.

My only other option right now to follow up further on your
suggestions is
to try a different machine.  Which I will do, as well.

Probably in the original PDF files, which I can't change.
