I usually run the kernel script to build the initramfs instead of doing a reinstall. That will work OK with the running kernel.
/sbin/new-kernel-pkg --package kernel-PAE --mkinitrd --dracut --depmod --update 
3.6.0-0.rc1.git2.1.fc18.i686.PAE

With the appropriate kernel version.
