G'day, "directed suspend" was a term I used in a text message to Adam Holt many weeks ago, to differentiate this type of suspend from "idle suspend". My word choice was for Adam, and it was not adequately defined. He forwarded it to you. Sorry about that.
"directed suspend" means the suspend is directed, or ordered, or requested, by action of the user. There are at least two ways to direct the laptop to suspend; either close the lid, or press the power button briefly. "idle suspend" means the suspend occurs by choice of the laptop because the user was taking no actions. The only way to trigger idle suspend is to wait for it to happen, while taking no action. While in "suspend" mode, the power LED will blink infrequently. If the power LED is solid on, then the laptop is not in "suspend" mode.
