This sounds like these activities are crashing when they try to start. First
quick thing to check is that you don't have many other activities running at
the same time as this can cause activities to crash as there is not enough
memory to run many at the same moment in time. I usually test activities
running one or two at a time (though you can usually run 5-10 before running
out of memory, depending what the activities are).

If low memory is not the issue, start the Log activity (it may not be favourite
starred by default, so look in the home list view if you can't see it in your
home ring). The Log activity will let you view the error logs generated by all
activities and is great for tracking down bugs. Use it to look at
org.laptop.RecordActivity.log and org.laptop.community.Colors.log (there may be
several numbered logs with this name, one for each time you tried to start it,
old logs are removed when you reboot). These logs will have perhaps a page or
so of expected WARNINGS, and DEBUG type messages, these are quite normal. Use
the search in the Edit tab to look for ERROR or a Traceback message, these
usually help us find/understand/fix crashing type bugs. If you see any, select
the text and copy and paste it into an email, or open a bug ticket and paste it
there as part of you report.

I've just tried testing Colors-15 (not installed by default so I downloaded it
from http://activities.sugarlabs.org) and Record-86 in the latest OLPC build
852 on an XO-1, both started up OK and I could paint and take a few photos.
