Fantastic, well spotted, thanks! I did have a quick look at owner and group but didn't notice the activity.info had odd rw permissions. I've just run: sudo chmod g+rw ~/Activities/Paint.activity/activity/activity.info sudo chmod o+r ~/Activities/Paint.activity/activity/activity.info ...to match what is else where, and Paint-28 now launches just fine under 0.82.1 build 767 on an XO-1 now.
