pdftex does not create pk files for you. So, unless you preview your
file with 72dpi, the pk file will not exist.

Maybe, you want to make pdftex to use 600dpi again:
  echo 'pk_resolution 600' > `kpsewhich 
-expand-var='$TEXMFMAIN'/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg`
