Umm, sorry folks - the missing c-auto.h file was missing because
my configure command didn't run to completion because of a problem
with file space. The log file looked fine to me as far as it went,
and its shortness didn't alarm me at the time. My apologies for
the waste of your time in reading my mails, but thank you to
the people who suggested things I should check.
