There is no "usual way". Debugging problems like this requires some
knowledge about what the application is doing. In this case, dvips
should find an entry in its map file that tells him that pcrr8rn is a
"build-in" font.
So, you should look up which config files (watch out for config.ps
and .dvipsrc) files and map files (watch out for psfonts.map) dvips reads.
If some search path is wrong, use other kpathsea flags to find out why.
