Not me, but LuaTeX. My reply to Mojca got grey-listed. I'm neither advocating using ligature characters in input nor in patterns. Rather I wanted to get an idea whether and how I should handle those characters when manipulating node lists myself, but couldn't make head nor tail of LuaTeX's output.
