Hello,
I have been working on an open source project that uses a TeX-based
linebreaker, but I identified a few TeX hyphenation patterns that, through
their GPL licensing, would require I use the GPL for my own project if I
distribute the patterns along with my package (I modify the patterns,
turning them into a different data structure, so I can't just read them in
as a separate package, at least as far as I understand the license).
Because most patterns are dual-licensed along with other, more permissive
licenses, I figured I would reach out to the authors of the GPL-only
pattern files to see how they felt about dual licensing. Some of these
pattern files are decades old, so I was delighted to receive any replies.
The computer scientist Janka Chlebíková, author of the Slovak patterns,
wrote back to let me know that she is supportive of more permissive use. I
was thinking this might be useful information to other TeX hyphenation
pattern users, and may be cause for re-licensing that particular pattern
file. I saw the note in the tex-hyphen repo about contacting the
maintainers via this address; please let me know if I can help / if there's
any action to take (such as a PR to the repo on GitHub)
All the best,
Jeremy
