The Filipinos solved a problem of possible confusion with beams.  To 
avoid that, conventional brackets have to be very light weight, as in 
your example on your site.  Many have advocated using curved brackets 
over beams but that is confused with slurs and phrase marks.

I would certainly do so if I had any.  I saw two types, one with 
straight splayed sides as shown and the other with a bit of
inward curvature to the sides, which probably would not be practical. 
This was autography, of course, and I started
using it before I even saw it.  I find it incredible that no one
in the 19th century ever invented it, because it has been badly
needed for a very long time.
