In section 3.14.2 this matter is discussed in great detail. It is indeed very 
complicated. Rather than try to summarize it right here, I suggest reading that 
section if you the full story on clefs in musixtex. I haven't recently compared 
this writeup with what's in the older version of the manual, but I trust the 
newer one is clearer.
