Hi,

I did not notice this because I was commenting elements selectively until
I noticed that problem was caused by \qu{<d} and \qu{>c}. I guess I was
lucky and previous run was successful (with those elements commented), so
did not need to run again to refresh .aux.

You can also selectively disable babel->spanish shorthands, in this case you
could have put

\spanishdeactivate{<>}

after '\begin{document}'.

Just a side note. This kind of things also appear with some tikz arrows used
together with babel->spanish.
