Safer still to use a suitable LaTeX profile. With such a
system introducing \sp as a newcommand in the way discussed
in this thread would not touch any previous definition of
\sp (except to deny the user access to the previous
definition), and only the command names used in the value of
the macro would be seen after the first parse.
