It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the passing of Katherine
Goodbar (NSS 5538) on July 18 at age 93.

Katherine became interested in caving in the early 1960s and the entire
Goodbar family was a fixture at all the Texas caving activities for many
years. Her husband, Blair, passed away much too soon in 1967 and with three
children to raise, Katherine’s active caving was severely curtailed.
Nevertheless, she remained interested in the caving world and encouraged her
children to follow their interests. Many of you will be acquainted with her
son, Jim Goodbar. Jim has made a name for himself in the caving world for
50 years.

Katherine served TSA as Secretary-Treasurer for three consecutive terms in
1963-1965. Her fellow officers for those years were Chuck Larsen, Orion
Knox, Pete Lindsley, and Carl Kunath. They all felt Katherine did a
wonderful job for TSA and they all remained friends through the following
years.

Katherine had a Masters in Education from Texas A&M and was a science
teacher for many years. In 2000 she was interviewed
by a representative of the Conservation History Association of Texas. The
transcript of that excellent interview may be seen at:

http://texaslegacy.org/bb/transcripts/goodbarkatherinetxt.html

Services will be at the Greenville Avenue Unity Church in Dallas with
interment at Huntsville, Texas.

We are diminished.

íVaya con Dios, amiga!
