I am assisting Bill Steele to raise the remaining $500 needed to get CaveSim to
TCR this fall. If you are getting this message twice, it's because I bcc'ed
you in hopes that you will personally help out financially. Every little bit
helps.
In addition to individual donations, I would also like to ask the owners of
Texas Show Caves to pitch in. I did not contact you directly in the bcc, but if
you know the owners, please ask them. We will give public acknowledgement to

We thank you in advance for your support of this very worthy educational tool
which is appropriate for children, new cavers, arm chair cavers and those who
have never been in a cave and are curious how to do it right without harming
the natural cave environment.

This is a request for financial assistance. At the recent NSS convention I was
impressed by the operation there of a portable artificial cave in a big trailer
called CaveSim (See cavesim.org). It was a buzz of activity and people were
constantly doing it. When crawling through it you try to not touch formations
which have sensors in them and a computer outside keeps track of how many you
touched and how long it took you to go through it.
It will cost $1,500 for it to be brought to TCR from Colorado Springs. It'll be
staffed and run through the weekend. I have raised $1000 toward that cost.

I thought I would post some examples, but to my surprise, I could not find
a good link to
one on the internet. All of the analysis reports online that I found
were cave-diving incidents, or just not posted as a separate link.
Here is one from 1977, but you have to scroll down all the way to the
bottom to see it,
and there is no sketch and only a vague analysis. Meaning there are no
photos, and no
interviews with the participants, to collaborate the analysis authenticity.

The most detailed caving accident analysis that I am aware of online, is
unfortunately the one many Texas cavers feel a very close connection to.

On a related note to the above link,
We may all disagree on a few things, but one thing many of us have in
common, ( that we don't share with the outside world ) is our common bond
to lost caving friends. One thing I miss when I skip an NSS Convention is
the toast at the banquet to lost caving friends. While I only vaguely
knew some of the cavers that passed away in my time, I think about them
often. It is sad that our lives are so hectic, that we can't remember
when another year lapses since their passing. Maybe if I would sit
around a caver campfire, I would hear a toast to one of them.

P.S. My next caving accident (which will be at least my 7th ) will most
likely require hauling my 300 lbs. on a stretcher. After that, you can all
poke fun at me and criticize/analyze whatever I did that I should have
known better. My 6 accidents, do not include many other near accidents or
errors that could have led to an accident. But I feel all of those made me
a more cautious caver, and definitely more opinionated.

My home is five miles north of Dripping Springs or thirty miles from the
Capitol Building. I have several hundred dry oak and cedar elm logs which are
cut to fireplace size. They need only to be split to the desired thickness to
be the best firewood that money can't buy. I have a very good wheeled gasoline
log splitter. All that is needed are volunteers to come here during the week or
weekend to split all that is needed or wanted. Two or more work best on the
splitter. One or two full size pickup loads are available for those interested
in a get together to do the splitting and I will furnish the beer and soft
drinks. Call or text to schedule.

I got rid of bedbugs with diatomaceous earth. I'm not sure how far it can
be tracked. i.e., suppose an ant tracks through diatomaceous earth and
then goes into a cave. How much does the ant bring along and leave in the
cave for other insects to cross over?
IT is natural and I like it for that fact, but unlike a pesticide that is
designed to degrade over time, diatoms can stay in tact for millions of
years. Their physical, not chemical, properties make them effective.
I don't think Louise was suggesting they be used in or around a cave, but I
thought it was probably a worthy subject to touch on. I simply don't know
what would happen and I'm curious.

Yes John Ackerman is the caver we have been helping dig in Fountain Spring Cave
Sinkhole this summer. We used electric hoist and very long conveyer to get mud
out of sink. Nice article and typical Ackerman sensations. However the 40 miles
might be the total of all caves he has put entrances in . ET
