Have I posted this yet?

So, KIWI SINK Dig this Sunday around 10 of the a.m. We opened the muddy
floor last Sunday and are digging in clean (mostly) water washed breakdown
now. Still a bit of clean-up to do in the old mud floor but it's really
fast and furious digging all around the pit. We loaded out 15 or 16 barrels
where usually we get only 7. Questions? Give me a call--410-303-1177. Park
at Ernies' across the street!!!

Moni,

There are a description and both plan and profile maps of Gruta del Palmito (Bustamante) in AMCS Bulletin 1, "Caves of the Inter-American Highway", p. 16-18. Bulletin 1 is available as a free download at <http://www.amcs-pubs.org/pubs.html>. An article about the cave breathing (airflow) is in AMCS Newsletter no. 1, p. 98. A proposal to turn the area into a national park is in Newsletter no. 2, p. 92-98. Early exploration and mapping are covered by two articles in Newsletter no. 3, p. 11-16. Those are also available as free downloads at <http://www.amcs-pubs.org/nl/oldNL.html>. There are many other references to this popular cave, including biological studies and more recent projects, in other AMCS and Texas Caver publications.

Linda,
Thanks for your review. Only other one I've seen from a caver was from Gill Ediger on Facebook: "I went to the picture show. It was, what, No Place on Earth. Despite the appearance of Rykwalder's name in the credits it turned out to be a pretty damned good cave movie. Bravo!" Gill is of course kidding about Phillip Rykwalder, who was listed in the credits as "Cave Logistics" or something similar.

I went to the 5:20 showing in Austin and was disappointed there were only about 20 people. I did see at least one group of cavers going in for the next show.

Re your comment "Families and people today would not be able to survive 1-1/2 years in a cave." Although most "typical" urban families today probably wouldn't survive that situation, there are a lot of outdoor types (e.g., cavers, river rats, climbers, etc) plus "country" folks (e.g., traditional farmers & ranchers) who are used to being self-sufficient and improvising. I think you and I know quite a few folks, including many on these lists, who would have a lot better chance of surviving than most.

If the movie doesn't get enough viewers for a more expanded release, I hope
that at least it will be available on DVD. It's worth seeing.

Hey grotto and SWR cavers,
We went to see "No Place on Earth" movie last night in Santa Fe. It was only $9, cheaper than other movies; a documentary that was well worth seeing. I was nearly crying by the end. It is very stirring. I hope we can get it at The Guild in Albuquerque. There were 0 other cavers at the showings in Santa Fe (at The Screen, on the campus of University of Art and Design) besides us. At the 2007 convention in Indiana, a presentation was given by the author (the main character in the movie) of "The Secret of Priest's Grotto." We went to the presentation then, and I was moved to buy the book and have it autographed. The movie characterizes the families, their trials, their stories of survival and determination to escape from the Nazis during World War II, when the Germans invaded the Ukraine. The movie makes you think, "Could I do this with my family if I had to." My answer is "NO!"
Anyway, if you get a chance to see the movie, you will be affected by it.

I am passing thru Flatonia west-bound on my way to the dig. It is about
2:30 am.

If my road-trip goes well, I will be there in the morning with a big ladder.

Maybe the ladder will help diggers. If it doesn't, then hopefully there
is some other cave project that can use it.

I bet the Honda Fit engineers never envisioned their tiny little car
hauling a big ladder across Texas.

--- Begin Message --- Great news about free electronic Mexican topos! However I am also not able to register. No matter what I try, I always get an error message. I suspect it may have to do with the fact that some of the "required" information boxes can't be filled in because they are grayed out depending upon what else one selects. For instance, if you choose United States as your country, then the box for State is grayed out. I tried to get around that by selecting Mexico as my country and filling out the State and Municipio boxes fictitiously. However in the Occupation section it is impossible not to have at least one grayed out box, because some of the choices are mutually exclusive. I sent a message (in Spanish) to INEGI using the contact form on their web site, so we'll see if they respond. Hopefully this is a glitch that can be fixed soon.

I'd like to hear if anyone else is able to register.

Mark

We went to the 7:20 show in Austin. It was a beautiful film that every caver
and their families should see.

My main complaint is that they didn't promote it via the local media. I
think it would have had a really good turnout if it had been advertised.
