GAWD - I am crying about this. After seeing her in the "coma" I would never

Keep the good news coming!

DeLorme has a new gadget that let's you send text messages from very remote

It is called "inReach SE."

It has other functions, and is rugged.

Cost $ 300.

Not sure if there is a monthly service fee.

The monthly fees are killer:
http://www.inreachdelorme.com/product-info/subscription-plans.php

I've heard renting such devices is sometimes an option. Another thing to
be wary of is accidentally setting off a search-and-rescue and getting a
big bill.

Then there's always this story about a defective TV sending out such a
signal: http://www.technewsworld.com/story/37435.html

Well, it is a roller coaster ride. Mal did well with OT and PT and talked
more but she was so sad and frustrated most of the day. I really think it is
because she is more aware of her surroundings and she is scared and
frustrated. She just can't do some things she knows she used to do. It is
just going to take time to get back that brain function.

Caleb came across an internet site that had traffic cam video of the
accident. May I say it is brutal but we hope it helps the prosecution. They
did cross at the intersection but were thrown at least four car lengths down
the road. I would not look at it last night and probably won't look at it
again. But we hope it helps. One year ago this man was released from jail
after spending 30 days for DWI. We need him off the road.

I have not heard a peep here about the convention ?

The NSS did post 21 photos 4 days ago on their Google+ page, but there was
no interaction, and not a single caving photo, or mention of actual caving
that went on before or after the sessions.

There was not a single post on the NSS community page of Google+.

Were there updates on Twitter or Facebook, or Caving News, or CaveChat ?
I was swamped this week with the realities of life, and not able to
research every forum for caving news. Were any of the sessions streamed
to the web ?

I have not been in contact with a single caver that was going or went to
the convention.

I wanted to be there very much.

My guess is, that I am just too far out of the loop to know what was going
on at the convention. I bet several Texas cavers went, and I definitely
look forrward to reading their trip report.

But from where I sit in Arcola, Texas, I do not YET see any reason to be
excited about outcome of the convention. nor that I missed anything
worthwhile.

I would bet that newbie cavers here, or potential newbie cavers feel the
same way.

Hopefully there will be lots of YouTube updates next week.

Here is a link to all of the daily newsletters of the convention:

http://www.nssconvention.appspot.com/courier

Each link listed is a PDF of that days newsletter.

The NSS did have a link with some basic info on the
site location of the convention:

http://www.nssconvention.appspot.com/

I think that is an improvement over the way it was done
at some other conventions, but back then cavers were not so
wired to the internet. It certainly saves paper, or at least it
should. It also allows for last minute corrections.

So I say Kudos to the caver that put that link together.

I wrote that last post having not made any effort whatsoever to research
the convention
updates on the web. ( I have been too busy the past 2 weeks ).

Here are some:

http://cavingnews.com/20130806-2013-nss-convention-update-monday-kickoff

http://cavingnews.com/20130807-ask-cavers-whats-your-favorite-thing-about-convention

I see now that there were daily updates on Twitter at
https://twitter.com/NSScaves

I have a Twitter account and have that site listed as something
I follow, but I have never used it. I guess I am going to have to
take a closer look at Twitter, and this tweet-page, or what ever they
call it.

I also see now that there was lots of daily updates posted on the
NSS Facebook Page at

https://www.facebook.com/NationalSpeleologicalSociety

I have not looked at that page in over a year, so I guess I will have to
start following that too. ( I did a great job of staying off of Facebook
for
over a year. )

I couldn't find anything on YouTube, or on CaveChat.org.

I did not see anything on Onlinecavers.com. ( I have not had time to follow
that site. )

Did I miss any other web place where convention updates were posted ?

David Locklear

There are a few photos of the convention on Facebook at the page
below:

https://www.facebook.com/events/139984606148326/

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151772767535935&set=oa.501244989944005&type=3&theater

I am very glad to see so many cavers using Facebook. I remember a time,
when
there was much resistance to Facebook.

Correction:

There has never been a convention with so many photos uploaded to the web.
  It
is just a matter of finding where they are all posted. I am guessing
that lots of
cavers posted stuff privately on their own Facebook pages. So instead
of email
being the provider of convention updates, it appears Facebook is now the
current trend.
