>From her mother, Vickie: Wow! Mal had a busy day today. This morning they took her to operating and put in a trachea tube and took out the tube in her mouth. This afternoon they took out her feeding tube and put a tube in her stomach. They did this in her room. She looks so much better without all those tubes in her mouth and nose. She has got to be more comfortable. The trachea tube should help with the pneumonia. And then after that they did a lumbar punch where they insert a needle in her spine to draw out spinal fluid so they could test if she had infection in her brain. The only real bad news was that her brain pressure was up in the 30's. They had not wanted it to go above 20. This was my concern about taking out the brain tube and sensor. How do you know what her pressure is if you are not monitoring it? But they said they will monitor by testing her physically and do another lumber punch. They prefer that than keeping a tube in her head that can be a source of infection. It could be the infection is increasing brain pressure. When the sedation IV ran out at 7 p.m. and it started beeping, she reacted quickly to the noise. She can make some faces! Also, the occupational therapist came by and put on some boots that help stretch out her calves. and she put her right hand in a splint to stretch out the fingers she has been keeping curled. Her left hand is OK because she moves that a lot more. She got a lot done but now she can just keep getting better.
