I was watching nat.geo or animal planet the other night concerning several
species of frogs that in at least one species was going exstinct. All of them
from a type of fungus. They were concerned about it jumping species.

More old news.  The Chytrid (Bd) epidemic began in the mid-80's and has
decimated frogs populations worldwide.  We have chytrid here and, yes, it has
been documented in many species other than frogs.  It seems to be practically
ubiquitous among Eurycea salamander populations but is asymptomatic.  That is
probably due to the fact that chytrid is primarily a skin infection that starts
with keratinized tissues (claws, fingernails).  That is bad news for most frogs
since they have tadpoles with keratinized mouthparts.  Their little mouths rot
off!  It gets worse when they undergo metamorphosis since there is a wholesale
turnover from the larval immune system to the adult immune system.  This
presents metamorphs with a greater risk of infection.
Our Eurycea salamanders seem to dodge the bullet becuase they don't have
keratinized mouthparts or toe tips and don't undergo metamorphosis.  All bets
are off, however when an individual is highly stressed (i.e. due to crappy
water quality).

This is just another reason why everyone should practice universal field
hygiene (wash your gear!).

Folks,

Thought some of you might be interested in the second NSS Webinar. This should
be an outstanding program by Carlene and Kevin Allred on Alaska Caving. Note
the time and date is June 6 at 8 pm and you should register early. The NSS
will be presenting webinars on various caving subjects which will also be
archived for later viewing. This is a pilot program and if successful, will
become part of the many benefits of NSS membership.

Thanks,

Geary Schindel
NSS AVP

Carlene and Kevin Allred are diehard Alaska cave explorers. They have been
caving since the 70’s and have spearheaded the exploration and mapping of
hundreds of caves in Utah, California, Washington state, Hawaii and of course
Alaska.

Carlene has won three medals in the NSS Cartographic Salon for her cave maps.

They will be talking about a few of their explorations and scientific finding
in their almost 40 years of caving. This will be a great presentation with
stunning cave pictures and great facts about the caves in the “upper” part of
America.

Together and with their kids they have organized many expeditions in the
Western U.S. and Alaska. Many of these expeditions have been in Alaska’s
hostile and amazingly beautiful, Wrangle Mountain area. They are truly an
amazing couple.

Please come and enjoy this webinar from the comfort of your own home on your
computer.

Wednesday, June 6th at 8PM Central Time (7PM Mountain time, 6PM Pacific Time)

Please forward this to others that you think would like to attend.

2012 NSS Convention---Last Chance to Preregister!!

MayaCon 2012 will be closing online registration after June 4, 2012. People who register early will avoid delays and waiting on-site.

As extra incentive, there are special perks for preregistration, and it is definitely worthwhile to register early. All guidebooks going to preregistered attendees will inclue a unique and special USB Jumpdrive--rather than a CD--containing all the cave maps. Also, everyone 21 and over who registers online by June 4th will get a commemorative MayaCon 2012 pint glass!

Yes, onsite registration is available, but pre-registeration not only saves time and includes benefits, but registering ahead of time also helps the convention staff plan ahead. So we ask that you take advantage of these next several days and help us bring you a truly great convention!

By the way, if you haven't already noticed, gas prices are going down! Gas prices in West Virginia have dropped almost $.50 since it's peak a month or two ago... And are still dropping!
