--- Begin Message --- Note: this mailing now adds the Texas and Arizona folks. Please publicize the event by appropriate means to inform potential attendees....thanks. Additionally, the event will appear in the next several NSS News calendars. Please see the SWR website at http://www.caves.org/region/swr/50th.html for additional information. You will receive this monthly reminder through the beginning of May.

Current news...

As previously noted, the region will be performing a volunteer project for the Fort Stanton Monument at the Spring Regional, March 24-25, 2012. We will be renovating a balcony railing on an historic fort building so that we may use the on-site cafeteria at no charge for the 50th event. Please plan on attending so we can accomplish this project quickly and efficiently.

A preliminary work weekend was accomplished February 24 & 25 to disassemble the balcony railing and begin initial restoration. The railing was removed and some fabrication of replacement items occurred. Much remains to be done, especially the refinishing and installation of the railing balusters.

Regional members should have received the Spring Regional notice by now. It contains important information concerning the volunteer work project. Please review it for necessary personal equipment needed during the reconstruction work.

Attending the 50th celebration, but don't want to camp out? The Village of Ruidoso has a large selection of motels/hotels. It is 23 miles from Ruidoso to Fort Stanton. An internet search will get you fixed up.

Linda Starr reports that the response by grottos for the 50 year publication has been anemic at best. You are running out of time (see below). We are not writing any of this for you. If you want your history and accomplishments to be acknowledged then send it in without further delay.

Monthly reminder..._*this is the final call for the information below. You've got 30 days to get your submissions to Linda Starr.*_

*Please note Linda's _NEW_ email address below*

--- Begin Message --- Agreed. Nice that the cave moved up in the long and deep cave lists, although they must have been using an out-of-date deep list, since at the old depth of 24 m it would have been nowhere near 65th, but rather less than 126th, the limit of the list at <http://www.utexas.edu/tmm/sponsored_sites/tss/longdeep/tssdeepcaves.htm>. Or maybe they meant 165th... The new depth of 72 m also puts them at 21st, not 14th as they claim. At least they got the length ranking right.
