Clint, Roger, Louise... and everyone too numerous to list here,

I would like to personally thank everyone for their hard work hosting our Board
meeting. By "our" I mean not only the Board of Governors, but every member of
our Society. We exist because of you, and it is through members such as
yourselves that we have accomplished so much over the last 70 years. Every
host group brings their own flavor to the Society, and I'd have to say you
definitely brought the meat to the table! I, for one, will always remember
"It's National Speleological Society Day on October 22nd!"

It is always amazing to see the diversity of our membership ride along so well
with the common goals we strive for. Thank you very much, and we look forward
to molding our Society into the organization that will make us all proud.

Clint, you deserve a special thanks for the work you're doing in Houston.
Additionally, I'd like to thank you for attending the Strategic Planning
Workshop on Sunday and the invaluable input you provided. Folks, let me tell
you this man is bubbling over with excitement not only for caving and his
fellow cavers, but for the Society as a whole. I'd say you are fortunate to
have him as the GHG Chairman, however I'm sure you already know that. We hope
one day to have him on our Society's board.

Keep up the great work and we'll see you underground,

Wm Shrewsbury

The events surrounding the fall NSS Board of Governors (BOG) Meeting are now at
a close, and we here in Houston can finally come up for air. The festivities
ended this afternoon (Sunday), with a strategic planning meeting at the
historic 1940 Air Terminal Museum at Hobby Airport, and let me tell you, there
are some really positive things happening within the NSS!

I am very, very glad that Clint was invited to attend. He has done, and I'm
sure will continue to do, and outstanding job as out grotto chairman. GHG is
lucky to have him come along on the tails of Kevin & Emily McGowan.

Aaaaarggg!

It was good to see apparitions from the past (some, however, barely
recognizable).

We are sorry to have missed it as we are in the last throes of getting ready to
spend a month

in the karst of Laos and Vietnam.   We will be back by Christmas and then in

Terlingua for the spring.   Campers welcome, but contact ahead with your plans
to make sure

we are actually there.

Hello all,

We still need more volunteers for the Robber Baron Cave "Open House" that
TCMA is hosting on Saturday, November 5th, 2011. We are opening the cave to
hundreds of neighborhood visitors of all ages from 9am to 4pm. We can use
your help to direct visitors through the cave, tend to visitors above
ground, and help with all the many other necessary tasks.

This has been a well attended even over the past years and we expect it to
be a success again this year. This is a great opportunity to help TCMA raise
much needed funds, educate the neighborhood about the importance of caves,
and get them excited by giving them a chance to explore one. Please let me
know if you can volunteer on November 5th and I will provide more
information.

After the Open House on Saturday, Geary and Sue Schindel are putting on a
party at their home for all the volunteers. If you want to stick around for
even more caving, the Government Canyon Karst Project continues on Sunday,
November 6th and is guaranteed to be a great time.

Come and spend your weekend caving and partying in San Antonio, TX!

--- Begin Message --- I'd like to agree that the arrangements for the NSS BOG meeting and associated parties were very good. Thanks especially for Louise and Paul for the party site and serving breakfast on Sunday to some of us who crashed at their house. Cavers (and the mosquitoes of the Houstopolis area) were well fed during the party. Rice campus very nice. I'd never been there. They evidently got started with enough land, and didn't get hemmed in like the UT Austin campus. Lots of green lawns, huge parking lots around the stadium, etc. Glad, though, that the Posse doesn't charge as much for beer as the Ginger Man, a similar near-campus pub, does.

I've attended very few BOG meetings since I was actually on the board, but I imagine this one was one of the most successful in years in terms of getting to meet local cavers. There were hardly any Texas cavers in the audience at the meeting itself. I don't especially blame them, but they missed Bill Liebman accidentally voting against one of his own motions. And another of his motions going down 1 for and 15 opposed.

Well said Bill, I had thought that Rice was a small agricultural community
college but was impressed by the campus (other than their mosquitoes were even
larger than Louise's).

Nice campus and I hear and know good things about their graduates (Bev Shade).

Bill, the place to buy beer around Rice is on the campus, at the entirely
volunteer-operated Valhalla, the non-profit Graduate Student Association pub
under the stairs to the old Chemistry Building. Beer was $0.35 when I was in
grad school there. That was a long time ago, admittedly, but I think it has
only risen to $0.75 per cup now.

Just look for the red lights by the stairs. The cavern-like atmosphere alone
is worth it.

Seeking student for a PhD in Environmental Sciences

Ball State University (BSU) has recently initiated a new PhD program in
Environmental Sciences that combines faculty from Geology, Chemistry, and
Biology. Presently, the Department of Geological Sciences is seeking a
potential candidate to admit into this doctoral program. The selected
candidate would receive annual tuition remission and a research
assistantship renewable for three years. The ideal candidate holds a MS and
is a self-starter with experience and ambition to seek external funding to
support their dissertation. Potential areas of research for this funding
line may include investigations into low-temperature geochemistry,
groundwater tracing, and stable-isotope processes in karst aquifers,
electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in karst environments, and
groundwater/geophysical studies related to the BSU ground-source geothermal
conversion. Interested students should visit the above link for application
information and contact Lee Florea at lflo...@bsu.edu to discuss their
interest in the program.
