Howdy Caver,

You are cordially invited to attend the Underground Texas Grotto meeting -

Wednesday November 2, 2011 from 7:45 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.

University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall (156 West 24th Street,
Austin TX 78712) http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html

Jean Krejca will be presenting the Program for the evening

Recent Sump Dives in Texas at O-9 Well, Reeds Cave, and Blowing Sink

Jean’s adventures include sharing in the fun where it takes a few friends
to haul gear down to the sump. She knows that Caves don’t end at the sump,
but it takes additional effort to push the passage when it is flooded. Come
check out the great program and for the fun and fellowship with Austin
Texas Cavers.

For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org

Officer contact, trip reports, event calendar, and new caver training links
to beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.

Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for
happy hour specials. This area is the best place to park and meet folks
walking over to the meeting. Then after the official meeting, we continue
with the decades long tradition to reconvene for burgers, beer, and tall
tales of caving at Posse East. www.posse-east.com

*The UT Grotto Program calendar is wide open and needs you*, the caver with
photos and a story to share about your adventures, scientific research, or
something else really cool. Contact me.

Sincerely,

Gary Franklin

200,000 on a Blazer?  That's remarkable, for a Chevy.  That wouldn't deserve
notice if it were a 'yota.  Just think, you could have logged those miles in a
comfy Toy instead of a rattlebox Blazer....

My last Toyota-the Land Cruiser: purchased with 127,000 miles, drove the HELL
out of it, and sold it at 267K.  It did require a new tranny near the end of my
tenure but it is still out there with a "new" factory 5-speed.  I think Terry's
has twice that mileage and is still going strong.

The story itself is the point, not the destination.
(HOW long have you been reading Sleazewheeze's posts on Cave Tex???)

Though not frequently challenged - my 21 yr old S-10 Blazer did turn
200,000 mi the other day.
It's been holding its own while THREE other R-22 Toyota's I know of
have lunched their motors FIVE times.
(Something to be said of old technology - pushrods, low compression
and large displacement.
Maybe I just know how to treat my toys right.)

Don't forget that Tortuga had 480,000 miles on it and was still going strong
when my son sold it in Albuquerque a few years back. It did have 4 heart
transplants and some other routine maintenance----

Tortuga was, of course, an unusual and well-loved Chevy. And it was not a
Blaah-zier

 HI Everyone!

I am so bummed I missed the TSA meeting - especially since I was on the agenda
to present the new fundraising sub-committee!

I am a professional grant specialist, focusing on federal, state and local
grants, plus foundations and corporate sponsorships. I am interested in
helping the caving non-profit community with fundraising for all kinds of
projects, including, but not limited to:

library and archiving resources

land acquisition

research

equipment (for land management, etc)

education/public outreach

special events

suggestions?
Right now, I am a committee of one, and welcome anyone who wants to help. I
will be busy looking for grants that meet the above criteria, and will add any
others y'all throw at me that are eligible. As we look for corporate sponsors
and foundations, I will reach out for assistance.

As you know, this is a slow process, but very rewarding when successful.

To be eligible for funding, the non-profit will need to be a 501(c)(3)
organization, such as the TSA, TCMA, etc.

In addition to acquiring the grants, I will work with non-profits on filing
reports and handle the management of any grants we receive to ensure we are
meeting all funding criteria and reporting requirements.

I look forward to working with y'all to raise funds and awareness for Texas
caves!
julia germany

This is a reminder that the Government Canyon Karst Project is happening
this weekend on Nov. 6, Sunday only. Any out-of-towners coming to help out
with the Robber Baron Open House on Saturday are more than welcome to put in
a few hours on the project Sunday morning, or for as long as they care to
stay. We will meet at the Volunteer/Research Station at 9:00. Take the first
right after entering the park, go through the unlocked gate, and drive about
a mile to the VRS.

See you there!

Evening Cavers,

This afternoon I picked up a huge box from the USPS office that was shipped from the Czech Republic. The box contains 50 t-shirts of varying size and 20 baseball-type caps that advertise the 16th International Congress of Speleology. (yeah, I said 16th, not 15th ICS).

The shirts are white or black and come in XXL, XL , L or Medium. They appear to be of the highest quality in material and screening, and I think they would be a wonderful addition to anyone's caving t-shirt collection. On the front of the shirts and the cap is the logo for the Congress. Go to their website if you wish to get an idea of the design.

I do not yet have a price on the inventory, but as soon as I do I will provide that information to everyone. First come, first sold - and no, I have not figured out how we will distribute the items to you. You can consider this a bit of a tease and as details become available I will update via Cave Tex. If we do not sell out via Cave Tex I will send a similar note to other forums.

Stay tuned and Happy Caving,

Michael
