Howdy Caver,

You are cordially invited to attend the Underground Texas Grotto meeting in
Austin Texas

Wednesday June 29, 2011 from 7:45 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.

University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall (156 West 24th Street,
Austin TX 78712) http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html

Peter Sprouse will present the Program - The Akumal 10K

Peter led a trip to the Quintana Roo for continued adventures of mapping the
extensive cave system that underlies the Yucatan Peninsula. His crew spent
ten days exploring and mapping portions of the massive cave passage system
in paradise along the coast while staying at the Akumal Ecological Center
http://www.ceakumal.org/ Side activities included snorkeling tin Turtle
Bay and a visit to Mayan Ruins. Please join the inner sanctum of Austin
Texas Cavers and visit with friends of the extended caver community.

For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org

Officer contact, trip reports, event calendar, and new caver training links
to beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.

Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for
happy hour specials. This area is the best place to park and meet folks
walking over to the meeting. Then after the official meeting, we continue
with the decades long tradition to reconvene for burgers, beer, and tall
tales of caving at Posse East. www.posse-east.com

The UT Grotto needs you, the caver with photos and a story to share about
your adventures, scientific research, or something else really cool. Contact
me.

Sincerely,

Gary Franklin

Cavers,

I apologize for the short notice, but I will be leaving Austin this
afternoon for west Texas, to join the TNC at a cave (not at the liberty
to mention the name) on a State Natural Area along the Devils River.
This cave is big, beautiful, and extremely interesting geologically and
biologically, but has extremely limited access. I would be happy to
take along another caver if someone wanted to ride out and back with me
and keep me company on the long boring drive. As a bonus, we will be
staying at TNC's Dolan Falls Preserve, and also take a short helicopter
ride tomorrow evening to Fern Cave to watch the bat emergence. The
catch is I am leaving around 3 or so this afternoon and returning
Thursday morning. If you are interested and can get away, PLEASE
contact me off list at [email protected] or call me at 512-663-2287.
You won't regret it!

p.s. Yes, I'll also be leaving again Friday morning for the Amazing
Maze Cave survey. More driving!

As the doldrums of hot summer kick in, I have become quite bored with the
topics generated here. I believe it is the perfect time for some of our more
adventurous explorers to drive their vans and trucks into the other reaches
and narrow canyons of northern mexico. You better hurry (leave now) and get
there before the rain from TS Arlene comes ashore. It wont do any good if
you're late. I will thank you in advance for the stories of escaping the
floods, building roads, months of worry, expiration of vehicle permits and
such.

Thursday and until September, Im free to go caving and can interpret for
those non spanish speaking cavers

Caving in the Mexican mountains during the wet season can be exciting and
terrifying. It was one year ago that we were hunkered down in the Van while
Hurricane Alex tormented our Laguna de Sanchez experience. It was a caving
trip that left an indelible memory. Thanks for the reminder.

--- Begin Message --- The July-August issue of Smithsonian Magazine has a long article about White-Nose Syndrome: <http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/What-is-Killing-the-Bats.html>. There is also an accompanying video that unfortunately fingers cavers as a potential vector for spreading the disease without offering any real evidence. :-(
