Hi Ellie (and Allan)--
This is great news! Flat Creek Ranch--with its caver-created artificial
cave, acres of shady campsites, secluded private swimming hole, overhanging
cliffs for vertical work, miles of mountain biking trails, disc golf course,
and great hot tub/sauna locationhas long been many folks¹ favorite TCR
location.
I know it has often been a difficult location to book due to scheduling
conflicts with its primary focus as a non-profit retreat center for Child,
Inc. So I appreciate the work it must have taken on your and Allen¹s part to
reserve it for TCR this year.
See you in October,
Frank

Be careful what you wish for, Allan. Ellie has a reputation for doing her jobs well, and the most effective way to make sure there's no dust is to have lots of rain. During one past TCR at Flat Creek Ranch, we did have rain, enough rain that it inspired a new sporting event, ... mud skiing behind 4 wheel drive vehicles.

I remember that one. Everyone was lucky they got to eat. I remember trying to
cook and all it did was rain.
The only one worse for cooking was at Andy's swamp.

Outrageous action by the Center for

bats. See message below from Peter Youngbaer, NSS WNS liaison.

CBD Files Intent to Sue in 30 Days if Caves Not Closed
by PYoungbaer » May 26, 2011 4:40 am
The Center for Biological Diversity filed a formal Intent to Sue in 30 days
letter with the Obama Administration yesterday, if the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Department of Defense
did not immediately close caves and mines on federal land.
Here's the press release:
http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2011/white-nose-syndrome-05-25-2011.html
In the press release are two additional links: the first to the actual
rather lengthy letter; the second to a CBD web page, which delineates their
entire WNS campaign.
The formal letter is again addressed to Secretaries of the Interior,
Agriculture, and Defense (Salazar, Vilsack, and Gates), and chastises the
government for not acting on their more-than-year-old original petition.
It reiterates the call for closing all caves and mines on federal land
known to harbor bats - without exception. It reiterates the call for
amending the definition of "take" under the Endangered Species Act. It also
calls for designating every cave (used by bats or not) on federal land as
"significant" under the Federal Cave Resources Protection Act.
I urge everyone to read the letter in full.

What the press release actually says is that the rights to make a
movie based on the book have been bought. That's _very_ different from
a movie actually being made, as any number of disappointed authors can
attest, and so can the fact that the rights had been purchased once
before.
Considering that the book is nonfiction, I wonder how much the rights
are really worth. After all, things like the plot, the names of the
characters, etc. are all in the public domain. I'd guess the would-be
producer just paid some small amount to avoid hassles.

Bill speaks the truth about the vast distance between someone buying the
movie rights to a book and actually making a movie.
Reminds me of when Hollywood producer Bernard Schwartz bought the rights to
Shibumi and contacted me about being a technical consultant for the caving
scenes (Shibumi's writer Trevanian, aka UT Austin film prof Rod Whitaker,
borrowed heavily from the accounts of Marcel Louben's death in Pierre St.
Martin). Six months later, however, Bernie's scriptwriter wrote the caving
part out of the screen play--replacing it with the hero being trapped in the
basement of a skyscraper.
Just as well that the movie never got made! Bernard Schwartz, however, went
on to produce Coal Miners Daughter, Psycho II, and St. Elmos Fire.

Attention Diggers,
Ernie says he'll be around both Saturday and Sunday if cavers want to
come out and dig in Kiwi Sink. The barrels are at the bottom empty,
and if they get filled I can come over and haul them out. Just alert
Ernie at 512-847-0183.

As many of you are aware, The Center for Biological Diversity is pushing an
online petition to close all caves managed by state or federal agencies. The
goal is to prevent the spread of WNS.
Found this recent link on a local Facebook page with the positive goal to
"Share El Paso with Native Plants and Animals."
http://action.biologicaldiversity.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=6898
This is the link to the petition to close caves. At least one reader had
already responded to the request.
I commented on the posting and noted my objections.

For anyone who may be interested in an older , large vehicle suitable for
caving. It is parked on a driveway on Wilcrest, one block south of I-10 in west
Houston. It is a 1995 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer tudor with 148,000 miles. It is
apparently two wheel drive, automatic, leather, power windows, cruise, new
stereo, I pad adapter, blue tooth. It is dark metallic green and tan and the
tires have 8,000-10,000 miles of wear remaining. Asking price is $ 6,900. It
may be one owner and appears to be perfect with no blemishes.
It appears to be extremely well maintained. Don't know about the mechanicals as
I have not spoken with the owner whose phone
is 713-907-3390.

Wheeee!
In March, in Pierce County, Wash., a sewer worker, 37, came loose from a safety
line and slid about 3,000 feet through a 6-foot-diameter sewer pipe at the
Chambers Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. He "could have drowned," according
to one rescuer, but he was taken to a hospital with "minor injuries." [Tacoma
