This is the premier conference for everyone interested in cave and karst
management, including private landowners, show cave operators, state and
federal land managers and biologists, NGOs such as The Nature Conservancy and
Bat Conservation International, cave conservancies, and others. It is only
held every other year, and the last one was folded into the ICS in Kerrville in
2009, so we haven't had a stand-alone NCKMS since 2007. This year we will be
in the fabulous Wasatch mountains in Midway, Utah, and meeting October 3-7.
The website is http://www.nckms.org/2011. There is currently a call for papers
(http://www.nckms.org/2011/CallForPresenters.html) with an August 15 deadline.
There are also scholarships available for participants, with preference given
to presenters and students (http://www.nckms.org/2011/Scholarships.html). The
NCKMS also publishes the proceedings from each and every conference to date,
starting with the first in 1975, making this one of THE best resources for cave
managers anywhere. And I would be remiss if I did not point out that they are
ALSO on the Karst Information Portal at http://www.karstportal.org.

I have been to every NCKMS since 1997, and I always learn a lot. This year I
will again be teaching a ½ day workshop on Bat Cave Assessment and Management
(http://www.nckms.org/2011/Workshops.html).

I hope to see a good Texas contingent there this year.

I would like to add my thanks and congratulations to everyone who gave their
time and effort to make it a very enjoyable convention.
Several more people not listed below also deserve specific mention:

the speakers: I am always impressed with the variety and quality of the talks at TSA Conventions, and this one was no exception. They covered exploration, digs, and scientific studies ranging from central Texas to Far West Texas to other states to the Galapagos and China, and even included a poetry reading.

the photographers and cartographers: thanks for taking the time to enter the photo and map salons; whether you won an award or not, your entries were certainly worth seeing

the folks who pack, load, unpack, sit for hours at the display tables, repack,
reload, at every TSA gathering
Lee Jay Graves (TSA Store, which makes a lot of money for TSA)
Ron Ralph, Jim Kennedy, et al. for the TSS
Bill Mixon for the AMCS
Becky Jones for Gonzo Guano Gear

James Jasek for herding almost all of us into one place and making us sit still
for a group photo;
Carl Kunath for taking another photo to send to Blair Pittman (I sent it
tonight)
looking forward to seeing one or even both of these photos in the Texas Caver

the many unnamed folks who donated some very interesting items for the auction; it never ceases to amaze me how much money is raised from such a relatively small group of dedicated cavers who either have a lot of disposable income and/or consumed a lot of the free libations

Thanks!
Logan

We had not been to a Spring Convention in a number of years and we
really enjoyed ourselves at this one. Thanks so much to all of you that
worked so hard.

Huge thanks for the cooking work you organize and do!

The lack of CRISES and the AMAZING food is Wonderful!

And I know how hard that is to pull off.

We all appreciate it.

Get well soon Mark, we missed ya!

I would like to thank, again: Chris, Leslie and Vico for spending most
of the day in the kitchen (as well as time before cooking and shopping),
and the various other people who stopped by and were given a knife to
use! Thanks!! Also to Stephen Bryant for organising the serving line so
y'all could get fed efficiently.

Big thanks to Crash for taking and returning all the cooks equipment in
the TSA (TSS?) trailer, allowing me to enjoy (?!) the ride out there on
my 'Bike.

Cheers,

Stefan

I especially want to thank Ellie for a great job, once again, and for
Michael for holding down registration.

And a HUGE thanks to Fritz Holt for pinch hitting for me for the
Kickapoo Cavern trips Sunday.

I really wanted to be more active in the whole Convention weekend, but a
rude wakeup call at 3 AM from a 6-7mm size kidney stone changed my
plans.

Instead, my lovely wife accompanied me to Val Verde Hospital in Del Rio
where I spent most of Saturday in a morphine-induced haze until a stent
was inserted.

I came out of surgery around the time of the TSA Business Meeting and
would have much rather been at the Convention than in recovery.

All in all, it was a very interesting weekend and thanks to all who
helped and, thank God, my wife, who never goes to caving events
ordinarily, decided to come to this one!

Great location, as well, and I hope we go there again!

Mark

Yes, please get these photos, plus, any and all other ones you may have
shot at the Convention to me either here or to texascav...@yahoo.com

I would really like trip reports from folks, as the one I submit will be
vastly different from the experience y'all had there this past weekend!

All,
The Convention was great fun--Thanks, everybody!!!

Bill Bentley and I spoke with many of you who were interested in seeing Five Mouth for yourselves and I have a list of names. I also will make sure that I post to this list as soon as we have a dig date. I'll be seeing Mrs. Fields Wed. and I am really looking forward to the look on her face when I give her the weekend report.

Thanks again. Jacqui
