David set out to go but fate or something like that intervened and it was not
to be. But he was able to visit a vineyard en route (that was supposed to say).

Hi George,
Too bad it can't be based on existing music. The Internationale is in the
public domain and you'd only need to change a few words:
Debout, les damnés de la terre
Debout, chatières des cavernes
La raison tonne en son cratère
C'est l'éruption de la fin
Du passé faisons table rase
Spéléologues, debout, debout
Le monde va changer de base
Nous ne sommes rien, soyons tout
C'est la lutte finale
Groupons-nous, et demain
L'Internationale de Spéléologie
Sera le genre humain!

The Edwards Aquifer is looking for someone with art experience to make a
replica of a large fossil (ammonite approximately 1 foot in diameter). The
Education Program would like to have a copy of the fossil made out of a light
weight material so they can carry it between schools as part of a display. The
original is pretty heavy and prone to being dropped on toes.
Anyway, if you're interested, this is a paying job. I can send you a photo of
the fossil.
Please respond off line.

On the TCR: A memorable event, as always. Put it in a swamp (we've been
there) and cavers will still find creative ways to have fun. Stefan and a
cast of dozens put on an excellent culinary show. Speleolympics-style
competition, mud wrestling, hot tubbing, tale-swapping and more -- provided
something for everyone. Many wonderful friends showed up to share the
weekend. The vendors delivered quite a few keepers, and the Si(y)phons led
us on a musical march through the big-hair days gone by to rock the house.
On the venue: It was what it was -- a big ol' dry ranch with lots of
dirt/gravel roads. We've seen worse. Allan did what he could. The weather
cooperated. Trees were a plus, the waterless scenery a minus. Oh, I know --
didn't offer an alternative, did I? We have some fine ones to the north --
but too far from the Center of the Caving Universe and its satellites. ...
Wouldn't want to start any jokes about the provinces.
On the dust: a bit of nay-saying here ... My left lung finally started
clearing out last night -- but still coughing it up. I suspect some former
asthmatics out there may have also experienced those familiar,
short-of-breath gasps -- accompanied by what feels like a stabbing backache.
The problem: too much dust of talcum-powder consistency was hanging in the
still air most of the time -- much of it resulting from how we were
outnumbered by the larger offroad crowd driving their Toyota FJs, ATVs, and
other knobby-tired 4x4 vehicles way too fast down the middle of these
unmanaged dirtbike trails.
On the dough: I have mixed emotions. The bottom line is just that for TCR:
it's a make-or-break every year. We can't have folks sneaking onto a
pay-per-visit site. So to prevent that, the options of banquet and
no-banquet could be revived: one price for TCR admission, another for TCR
plus the feed. I recall we did this in the past, with those opting for the
latter choice receiving a food and drink coupon. That said, those who
protest about the Saturday feed during registration should be shamed into
buying it -- it's a great thing!

Thanks to all those who came out.
Yes, it was a little dusty. That happens when it doesn't rain for a
while.
I did see lots and lots of people having fun and that is the whole
point of TCR.
I really want to thank the cooks for the great meal, the people who
manned registration, Pete for the hot tub and sauna, the Terminal
Syphons for a rockin' show, the vendors and organizations, and all
the people who worked behind the scenes doing all the things that
make TCR happen. Thank you to everyone helped.
This year we tried to find the dustiest spot we could, you'll have
to come to TCR next year to see the next big surprise.
See y'all next year,
Allan

The sound for the Syphons was great. I could hear all the instruments,
lead singer, and backup singers. That's a lot to mix, and Rod had them
sounding great.

The website of the Maverick Grotto states that the grotto is inactive at
the moment. Anyone out there care to comment on whether this is simply the
summer doldrums or indicative of a more serious situation for the grotto.

I don't think we've had a meeting since about this time last year, we lost
our chairman and lack of interest never replaced him.
We do have 2 other grotto's in the same area, DFW and Cowtown.

I took quite a few pictures of this spectacle which I hope to post next Monday.
It was great and took a lot of work (costumes) to produce.

Texas cavers,
The DFW Grotto will resume its project to continue the exploration and mapping
of Spring Creek Cave, about 15 miles north of Boerne, Texas, the weekend before
Thanksgiving, Nov. 20 - 21. If you would like to see this easy and interesting
cave, please join us. I only ask that you let me know that you are planning to
come.
We will be camping at the cavers' campsite at nearby Cave Without a Name both
Friday and Saturday nights.
Spring Creek Cave is a wetsuit cave. You will be swimming in deep water, but
fins are not necessary. A trip to the waterfall shaft about 4,000 feet into
the cave, is a recommended destination. There are excellent photo opportunities.
Besides touring the cave, if you would like to join a mapping team, and perhaps
an exploration team (we need a team to push and map a side passage), which will
require dealing with mud in addition to the water, let me know and I'll tell
you
about it.
Contact me offline.

Alright, all you caving ghouls!
Having gotten your bellies full of candy, sweets, orange beer (?), razor blade
filled caramel corn balls and apples, and still wearing that Halloween make up,
it's time to work off those calories, get those cobwebs outta your hair, and
lose that sunken look to your face by helping out at Longhorn Caverns this fall!
This will be occurring the first Saturday of November, December, February,
March, April, and culminating in May.
The staff of LCSP is very enthusiastic about having the TSA back and involved
and plans several surprises for us later on.
Some of the tasks we have in mind will occur above the cave, in the cave, and
WAAAY back in the cave.
They're listed below and, if interested, contact me offline, expressing what
are you're interested in:
* Ridgewalking/surveying/mapping known and unknown caves on the Park
property (depends on cavers familiar with the Park layout participating).
* Continuing the ongoing survey WAAY in the back of the cave, near
Crownover, around the sump area (Peter Sprouse heading up, but, ease of access
is contingent on a couple of unknowns: water levels and whether the
Crownover Causeway has silted back in or not. Unknown at this point).
May have to start this up in December, once the above conditions are know.
* Trail "Rebuilding" in the cave. Quite a few areas of the cave, Lovers
Lane, in particular, were washed out this spring and need to be rebuilt.
I'll be heading this up and it WILL begin in November. Could use folks
with experience in building trails.
There are a plethora of other projects the park has in mind for us, but, this
is just the start. (They didn't want to overwhelm us!).
If you have any interest or experience in the above, please give me a scream.
We will be meeting at the Visitors center at Longhorn Cavern State Park 9-ish
on Saturday.
Please bring your own water, food, and camping gear, as camping will be
available at the LCSP Picnic area both Friday and Saturday nights.
Please reply, off line, if you'll be coming or have any questions.
If you don't hear back from me right away, don't fret and howl in the night and
think I'm ignoring you. I will be in the Guads next week and, happily, out of
reach of cellphones, Facebook, TV, and the Net.
Thanks and have a good weekend!

Let it never be said that there aren't enough opportunities to go caving in
Texas!
Between all of our existing TSA projects (CBSP, Gov't Canyon, Longhorn), the
new Devils River Project, TSS' Lake Amistad Project, the DFWG's Spring Creek
Cave project, and a load of other less publicized projects out there, just pick
a weekend and there will be something to do and somewhere to go.
As long as they're announced here and entered into the wonderful TSA Calendar.
Which leads us to our next new Project!
I began discussions over a month ago, during a sojourn to Longhorn, and after
having given a cave talk to a large group of Boy Scout leaders near Salado.
The general manager and landowner were very interested in beginning volunteer
activities with the TSA at this spectacular cave and, IMHO, one of the best
show caves in the Southwest.
Here's what they initially would like for us to do:
Power Washing the trails - After hours (they close at 5:30) and using their
equipment. Rubber boots or tennis shoes recommended.
Algae cleanup from formations - Ditto, but if you have resto equipment, you're
welcome to bring it.
I'm thinking this would be a Friday night and/or a Saturday night project, for
as long as it takes or folks are interested, and they also have graciously
volunteered to take volunteers on a wild cave tour, either Saturday day or
Sunday AM.
No dates have been set, as I'm just trying to gauge the interest level. This
would be an excellent project for college cavers, due to it's proximity to
Austin (and DFW, for that matter).
Please contact me offline and I'll put you down.
Thanks again and hope to hear from YOU!
Mark
